Your partner in therapy

Hi, I’m Dr. Brett Gaynor

I’m Dr. Brett Gaynor, a clinical psychologist in Berkeley, California dedicated to helping youth, their parents and adults experience meaningful change through authentic connection. My approach is centered on deep, lasting transformation, offering expert guidance in a safe, trusting environment where individuals can uncover their inner strength, navigate challenges, and begin their path towards increased resilience.

Whether you’re an overwhelmed parent seeking support with your child, or an individual looking to make sense of current conflicts or past traumas, my role is to guide you with compassion and expertise. I view each person as the protagonist of their own story, with the power to create positive change. My goal is to ground and partner with you, whether through one-on-one work or by strengthening the relationship between parent and child, to achieve growth that lasts beyond therapy.

  • When I’m not in the therapy room, you can find me traveling, in a independent bookstore far too long, or chasing my toddler around practicing the self-regulation I practice with clients.

I’m a lifelong Bay Area native who studied acting seriously until age 16, and I still tend to think in unfolding storylines especially during CAL football games, where I keep hoping for a different ending especially during CAL football games, where I keep hoping for a different ending. (I’ve been character-building through near wins since en utero).

I love all things water-related, most often underwater (scuba diving), like hiking in theory more than in reality, and resonate deeply with all things mid-century. While I once fought NPR on every high school car ride, I now cherish it. If it’s under 75 degrees, expect me in a sweater—no matter the season.

My philosophy & approach

Healing is about long-term growth.

We’re not here to make quick fixes. Therapy is both a process and relationship. Together, we’ll build a partnership grounded in trust and attunement. You’ll feel personally connected to me, knowing that I’m truly invested in your well-being. I offer high-touch care that’s tailored specifically to your needs, creating a human-centered experience where you’re seen, heard, and understood in a way that feels real—no cookie-cutter approaches here.

Working with Children & Parents as Individuals and as a Pair

I work with both parents and children (5-18 years) as individuals and as a unit, addressing the complexities of the parent-child relationship with empathy and versatility. This holistic approach allows for meaningful change and the opportunity for the child and parent to feel supported, seen, and empowered.
